Toughened vs Laminated: Which Safety Glass Goes Where?
Both count as safety glass; they fail completely differently. The practical rules for doors, low panes, overhead and security.
Toughened and laminated glass both qualify as safety glazing, but they protect you in opposite ways. Choosing between them is about what happens after the glass breaks.
How each one fails
Toughened is heat-treated so the surface is in compression. It is four to five times stronger than ordinary glass, and when it does break it shatters into small blunt granules rather than shards. The opening is left empty.
Laminated sandwiches a plastic interlayer between panes. It cracks like ordinary glass but the fragments stay bonded to the interlayer — the pane stays in the frame as a barrier.
The placement rules of thumb
- Doors and side panels: either satisfies the critical-locations requirement; toughened is the common economical pick
- Low-level glazing where falling through is the risk (landings, floor-length windows, Juliet balconies): laminated, because the pane must stay in place
- Overhead and roof glazing: laminated on the inner face without exception — granules raining down is not acceptable
- Security: laminated resists repeat blows; toughened, once broken, is gone
Use both at once
Many of our units pair a toughened outer with a laminated inner — impact strength outside, retention inside. It is the standard recipe for walk-on glass and balustrade infills.
