Why the roof dominates
High summer sun strikes roof glazing at a steep, efficient angle for most of the day, while walls take a glancing blow. A conservatory roof can admit three times the solar energy of the same area of vertical glass. Any upgrade budget goes to the roof first.
The solar control option
Roof units built with a solar control coating cut the g-value from around 0.75 (clear glass) to 0.3–0.4 — half to two-thirds less heat admitted, while keeping the space bright. Neutral tints add a visual cue of coolness; self-cleaning outer faces earn their keep on a roof you will never ladder up to.
Walls: selective, not blanket
South and west elevations benefit from moderate solar control; north walls should keep standard low-E to preserve winter gain. This mix keeps the room usable year-round rather than trading one season for the other.
