Choosing Glass for a South-Facing Room: Solar Control Explained
G-values, neutral coatings and when to accept a little less winter sun to stay comfortable all summer.
South glazing is a gift in January and a problem in July. The right glass keeps the winter benefit while taking the edge off summer — the trick is understanding one number.
Meet the g-value
The g-value is the fraction of solar energy that gets through the unit, direct and re-radiated combined. Plain double glazing sits around 0.75; dedicated solar control coatings bring it down to 0.4 or below. Lower g means cooler rooms — and slightly less free winter heat.
When to reach for it
- Large south or west-facing sliders and gable glazing
- Conservatories and garden rooms that become unusable on sunny afternoons
- Roof glazing of any orientation — the sun hits it at a steep, efficient angle
Will it make the room dark?
Modern neutral solar coatings hold light transmission near 70% while halving heat gain — a far cry from the mirrored bronze glass of older office blocks. Some tint options add privacy as a bonus; view them as a styling choice rather than a necessity.
Balance with the heating season
A whole-house switch to strong solar control on every elevation costs you useful winter gain on the south side. The better pattern: solar control where overheating bites, standard low-E elsewhere.
