Acoustic Glass: How Laminated Panes Cut Traffic Noise
Why asymmetric panes and acoustic PVB interlayers beat simply thicker glass, and what decibel gains to expect.
Noise complaints are now one of the most common reasons for upgrading glazing. The good news: the physics is well understood, and the right unit build-up makes a genuine, measurable difference.
Why standard units under-deliver
Two identical 4mm panes share the same resonant frequency, so both dip in performance at the same point — right in the range of road noise. Symmetric units also couple through the cavity, passing vibration from one pane to the other.
The acoustic toolkit
- Asymmetry: different thicknesses (6mm + 4mm) stagger the resonance dips
- Mass: heavier glass simply moves less for a given sound pressure
- Acoustic PVB: a laminated pane with a damping interlayer converts vibration to trace heat — the biggest single win
- Cavity width: bigger gaps help the low frequencies most
What the numbers mean
A standard 4-20-4 unit achieves roughly 30 dB reduction. Move to a 6.8mm acoustic laminate with a 4mm or 6mm partner and you are into the high 30s. Every 10 dB is perceived as a halving of loudness — the jump is bigger than the figures look.
Whole-window honesty
Glass is only part of the path: trickle vents, seals and frame gaskets leak sound around even the best unit. Fit acoustic units and refresh the seals in the same visit.
