How to Make Roman Blinds (for beginners)!
In this guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of making Roman blinds. Roman blinds can be a great addition to your home decor, and making them yourself can be a rewarding project. Let’s get started!
Materials Needed
- Fabric
- Lining fabric
- Tape measure
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Cord lock
- Cord
- Cleat
Step 1: Measure the Window
Start by measuring the window where you want to hang the Roman blinds. Measure both the width and height, and add a few inches for seam allowances.
Step 2: Cut the Fabric
Using your measurements, cut the fabric and lining fabric to the desired size. Make sure to cut an extra strip for the border of the blinds.
Step 3: Sew the Border
Sew the border strip to the front fabric, right sides together. Press the seam open and fold the strip over the lining fabric. Sew along the edge to secure it.
Step 4: Create Casings
Measure and mark evenly spaced lines on the back of the blinds. Sew along these lines to create casings for the dowels.
Step 5: Insert Dowels
Insert dowels into the casings to give structure to the blinds. Trim the dowels to fit the width of the blinds if necessary.
Step 6: Add Rings and Cord
Sew rings at the back of the blinds, evenly spaced along the casings. Thread the cord through the rings, ensuring it is long enough to reach the bottom of the blinds.
Step 7: Attach Cord Lock and Cleat
Attach the cord lock to one side of the top of the blinds, and the cleat to the wall next to the window. This will allow you to adjust the height of the blinds securely.
Conclusion
Making your own Roman blinds is a fun and rewarding project, especially for beginners. The step-by-step guide provided above should help you create beautiful and functional blinds to enhance your home decor.

Hard to hear her when the music in between is so much louder. My ears don’t have time to adjust. But overall, I like this tutorial. She explained it well and I can see what she’s doing.
Wow this has to be the best video I have ever seen to teach how to build something! And I watch so so so many and end up scratching my head rewatching and eventually cobbling something together that does not even look remotely like the instructional video. Thank you so much I actually think I can do this now!
If the audio as louder I would watch it all.
Thank you for the video. even though i had speaker on 100% you are not very audible. It sounds like you are speak to your inside cheeks and not an audience.
unfortunately can't watch this a the volume keeps going up and down.
No need for lining strips and stitchwitchery to make channels for the dowels – simply sew two rows of stitching to make a channel between the lining and the main fabric once you've turned it right side out, repeat for each dowel's position. Slide the dowels in the same way as you would with the bottom bar and stitch the edges.
Your demonstration and video looks like it was going to be a excellent but the music is over loud and I can't hear what your saying once turning down the sound… is it something that only I am having difficulty with please?
Music far too loud. I also had to give up with this video. Such a shame
What is stitchwitchery?
I'm a tailor, I know how to sew
Your instructions were easy to follow but please, PLEEEEASE get rid of the music. It is very distracting
Mark the center of the top and bottom of both the outer fabric and the lining before you start sewing and then you can just match the little marks.
I absolutely loved your tutorial, no idea why I didn’t look on YouTube earlier. Thank you so much for sharing and very precise and easy instructions. I am planning on making blinds for my whole house. The sound of the music was a bit loud compared to your voice on the video, but it didn’t stop me watching and pausing and watching again so it was clear in the end. Not a criticism, just wanted to let you know. Thank you again for sharing and showing exactly how I can get the job done in my own home here in the UK 😊
I'm sure this is really useful but the sound quality is atrocious. The music is twice as loud as the presenter's voice.
Love your video, so helpful.
I’m going to echo the comment of quite a few people. Struggled to hear your voice and the music was like a whole marching band at full volume. Honestly ended up muting it to get to the end.
Sad that I had to stop watching halfway through. The music between the talking blares at 5 times the volume.
Good video. Music was very loud compared to instruction audio and had to quickly turn down very time it came on.
Sorry, i stopped watching bc your voice audio was too low and your music was too loud. Hurts my ears.
I really wanted to watch this but couldn't because the music is so much louder than your voice, I had to turn the music down because it was too much, but then turn it up again to be able to hear you. Gave up.
Well that was nice
