How to Choose the Right Window Treatments

How to Choose the Right Window Treatments

When it comes to choosing the right window treatments for your home, it’s important to consider both functionality and style. Here are some tips to help you make the right decision.

Functionality

First and foremost, consider the functionality of your window treatments. Think about the level of privacy, light control, and insulation you need in each room. For bedrooms or spaces where privacy is key, opt for blackout curtains or blinds. If you want to maximize natural light, consider sheer curtains or light-filtering shades.

Style

Once you’ve determined the functionality you need, it’s time to think about style. Consider the overall aesthetic of your home and choose window treatments that complement it. If you have a modern home, clean and minimalistic blinds or shades might be the perfect choice. For a more traditional look, try curtains with elaborate patterns or textures.

Conclusion

Choosing the right window treatments is essential to enhance both the functionality and style of your home. Consider your specific needs for each room in terms of privacy, light control, and insulation. Additionally, choose window treatments that match the overall aesthetic of your home to create a cohesive look.

FAQs

1. How do I determine the level of privacy needed for each room?

A: Consider the location of the room, its proximity to neighbors or public spaces, and your personal preferences. Rooms like bedrooms and bathrooms usually require a higher level of privacy.

2. Are there window treatments that can provide both privacy and natural light?

A: Yes, sheer curtains or light-filtering shades can offer some level of privacy while still allowing natural light to enter the room.

3. What window treatments are best for insulation?

A: Heavy and lined curtains or blinds can provide better insulation as they help to keep the heat in during winter and block out sunlight in summer.

This is so helpful! I’m really don’t like shutters, but struggling what else can be done for couple of round top windows. I almost said yes to shutters and saw your video. yYou are right about many people Bree’s to shutters because “I just don’t know what to do”… Any suggestions?

My biggest dilema is what colour of screens and/or filters to choose for the inside of my windows that will compliment my newly painted walls and curtains. Could you maybe assist?

Hi Julie. I have just discovered your channel and I am learning so much! I just moved into a new home and would love your advice on how to select sheer panels and how to layer them so beautifully as you have behind you in this video. Thank you

Plantation shutter should be banned 🙂 Julie, I was hoping you would discuss about half blinds. I'm not sure what it's called but it's common in some newer homes. It's not pretty but I like that it gives just the right privacy but let the top open

I have 10 ft ceiling. All the affordable curtains I've seen are shorter what I need. Help!

I disagree about the plantation shutters. I love them

Hi Julie, I have recently installed custom cordless blinds in our new construction house. The problem is the windows set at 8ft and I cannot comfortably reach the blinds to pull them up or down. Would you have any hacks, ideas on how I can attach a chain/string after the fact. I got them from Lowe’s installer says I can attach chain now. But I’m sure there is a creative solution. Maybe a pull down clasp with a string? Let let me know? They are not motorized. Thank you! 🙏

    Hi Julie,
I loved this video and especially your expert comments about aesthetics. I have very low ceilings and have read about ceiling mounted rods and would like more information and your opinions. Thank you for your consideration 😊

  10. @julie thanks so much for this video,it is very educative, please for cold regions like Canada what kind of window treatment would you recommend during the winter season or is there one that can be used for all season

Very helpful video, thank you! How wide would you typically make your sheer curtains vs. the rod if you also have opaque drapery panels layered on there?

  12. B Mtz 1 year ago

Best content on window treatments. Thank you! I also love sheer drapery panels, but I don't know how to coordinate those with my large kitchen window right next to them. I've tried to attach a picture for your reference. Sheer drapery panels are not practical for the kitchen window. So should the materials and height for the window treatments for the sliding glass doors match the kitchen window? There is 5 inches separating the 93" wide kitchen window and the 95" sliding glass doors.

Julie, Thanks for so much great info! How do you place drapery panels on windows that wrap around a corner of a room?
Would you place panels in the corner as well as each end? Or just one planet on each wall at the end of the windows?

If you have three large windows in a row, what do you suggest ? There is also three smaller windows above the large windows in this living room that has a 10 foot ceiling.

You emphasize that it is a personal choice and not what everyone else is doing. It is confirming to know that individuality should be valued. Should I use the same questions when selecting window treatments for a church fellowship hall? Our burglar bars were installed on the inside of windows and we are trying to find a not-so-expensive way to hide them. What if we increased the number of sheers. We have a function coming up and would like to get started as soon as possible. Thank you for all the tips and class on line.

What do you recommend to hang balloon shades that are rather heavy?

I'm planning window treatments for a new home. Do you have tips or a video on how to choose the material or color. I will buy mostly new furniture and bedding so I have nothing to match. Leaning towards white or pearl gray as neutral tones with my white walls and floor tile.

Julie, Love your videos. I know you hate plantation shutters but we have 3 big arch windows that get a lot of sun and I think will look great with 5 inch wide/no lever, brown shutters. I have a modern aesthetic in my house. I can't think of a better choice-can you suggest something else??

I have an open concept floor plan. Dining room, kitchen, living room anchored by windows on either end with custom inside mount shades on each set of windows. I have blackout drapery panels on the living room windows, which are needed for privacy and sound buffering. I have sheers on the dining room windows framed by stationary drapery panels. I am not happy with the look of either windows. Do I use the same window treatments for uniformity or are separate styles acceptable in a totally open concept space?

Hey Julie, I know that you say sheers should be layered under curtains/drapery. Can I also layer a sheer over a roller blind?

  25. Amy Pung 1 year ago

I don't know how to coordinate sliding glass door curtains with the window curtains that are on the same wall 🙃. I also have an arched window with vaulted ceilings, so I have no idea how high to mount a rod for that?? Lol

  26. Jim Curtis 1 year ago

Julie, if I'm not sure what window treatments to do in a new townhome, could I start with good quality shades first? Then, just either stick with those for a minimal, modern look or later add on drapery if I want a different look.

    My Design Problem:
We built a new house a few years ago and used Wooden Blinds throughout the entire house. Our house is large and I feel overwhelmed at the thought of replacing all these windows with new treatments. I love rich, dark, plush drapes. Would it look like I took the easy route by just hanging drapes on top of my existing wooden blinds? Thanks In Advance.

I have an upper set of 3 angled windows facing south and am looking for window treatments to use to block the afternoon sun. Can't find a company who carries a product for the angled window.

Such an informative video. Thank you 🙂

I like plantation shutters. They’re hugely popular here in Australia and a status symbol as they are so expensive. But, I personally prefer other options as I don’t like how much of the view and light they block. I wonder why they’re so embraced here. And have been for years… Anyway, I’ll be selecting other options and your video has helped me so much. Thank you x

Another thing, how many panels should I use?

  36. Marva Mclendon 1 year ago

I've lived in my senior building for 7 months now. Each room has consecutive 3 windows. I need advice how to install blackout curtains. I'm thinking about using one long rod to cover all 3 windows. But if I do that will I need to put an anchor in the middle? Also, will there be a gap between the curtains? The width combining all 3 windows is about 72 to 80 inches. Please help!

  37. ux0042 1 year ago

Nice summary. I have three 3 tall windows along a wall that are too far apart to treat as a single unit yet I think too close for a separate rod above each (I think it will create visual tension). Also one window butts against a corner wall.

Watching this video for the first time now jeje I have a question, what type of windows would you suggest for a home in the Caribbean? The usual is to have them made in metal or a mix of metal and glass (lama windows) to protect against strong hurricane winds, but it is a bit distracting to the eye to see all those horizontal lines, especially if I want the have them in a dark color like black or dark brown. Any suggestions?!

  39. A Kontilis 1 year ago

Very good, I had a lot of questions, and you answered most of them. I am only left wondering how long curtains and sheers should be (and where they measure from the floor.) Is that a trend that changes or is there a solid, classic answer for that. Lovely video!

I struggle to choose window treatments for my kitchen. Currently, we have blinds, which are not esthetically pleasing, but very practical. What would you recommend for kitchen windows specifically?

  41. Priscilla Then 1 year ago

What do you think of valances made of drywall? Currently, I have plastic blinds (yes, not great, I know), and would like to replacing them with sheers and black out curtains. Is it possible to install a double curtain rod that hands upside down, or are they for walls only?
